The Western Cape is the oldest and most gracious of South Africa 's provinces and is well loved by tourists both international and local. Forming the most southerly part of South Africa , the Western Cape has a long coastline that is bordered by both the Indian and Atlantic Oceans , with the two meeting at the southernmost tip of Africa – Cape Point. The Western Cape has much variety for tourists, and not only is the terrain ever-changing, the attractions excellent and the weather spectacular, but a wide variety of accommodation options will ensure a wonderful holiday for almost any budget. The Western Cape is the gem of South African tourism, and it is estimated that over sixty percent of foreign visitors to the country include the province in their itinerary. It is no wonder with the quality and amount of true highlights on offer. From the semi-desert plains of the Karoo to the sublime, sparkling beauty of Cape Town , to the earthy attractiveness of the fishing villages of the West Coast, the Western Cape makes for a truly spectacular holiday experience. Just within Cape Town there is the iconic Table Mountain with its hi-tech cable car, the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens with its fascinating and unique flora, the ever popular Victoria & Alfred Waterfront with its working harbour, shopping, entertainment and of course the chance to catch a ferry to the notorious Robben Island, the home of many political prisoners including former president Nelson Mandela. Further out one finds the Winelands, with its beautiful mountain scenery, fabulous wines and historic homesteads, the Breede River Valley , where much of South Africa 's fruit is grown, and also the famous Garden Route , which takes in most of the province's varied and spectacular scenery. In fact, the Western Cape offers travellers so much that a second trip is a must. And a third. And quite possibly a fourth…
